The 29th December 2008 seen the burial of 38 year-old Sargent Jackie 'Manny' Manual of X-Ray Company, 45 Commando. Jackie was from the North East and had family and many friends in the region. He died alongside Corporal Marc Birch, from Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, and Marine Damian Davies from Telford, Shropshire. They were killed by a 13 year-old suspected suicide bomber in Helmand province, Afghanistan on the 12th December. As bad as it was that these fine men died in the line of duty, it is also abhorrent that the Taliban manipulated an naive child into carrying out such a task. The boy pushed a wheelbarrow packed full of explosives covered over with papers over to the patrol, then detonated the device.
The funeral was held at St Mary's Cathederal in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was well attended. A contingent from the RMA Tyneside Branch were also in attendance. Rest in peace Royal. |

In total seventy seven (77) boxes were dispatched to 40 Commando; between December 07 and January 08. The majority of the boxes were sent to the RMR Tyne Marines attached to various sections. The Chairman and Secretary have received letters from the lads, all have been replied too.
Take a look at the pictures of the boxes before they were sent... |
